Growing up in a military family, Mazyck first joined the Armed Forces with the Army Reserve while she was a student at Bauder Fashion College in 1994.

As a member of the Army Reserve, she went to basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, where she became a human resource manager.

She transitioned to active duty in 1997, joining the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, where she went on to serve eight years and become a Sergeant First Class.

Mazyck was entangled with a jumper in a routine jump and was paralyzed from the waist down as a result. After rehab, she has gone on to compete in the Paralympics and serve as a spokesperson for disabled veterans.
